This is THE book Walt seriously studied to improve

This is THE book Walt seriously studied to improve realism in his early animation. Written by Eadweard Muybridge, Walt checked it out from the Kansas City Library. According to his biographer, Bob Thomas, “Walt took pored over Muybridge’s photos of running horses and athletes in movement, then had the pages copied by a photostat firm. He returned the book to the library and kept the stack of photostats beside his desk as a guide for his drawing. His employers were delighted with the improved realism of the drawn cartoons, and he and Ub [Iwerks] began turning them out..:” (Today is Ub’s birthday!)
It really is something to hold a book that Walt held and turn the pages that Walt turned.
This volume of Animals in Motion is significant in Disney history. So much so, it was featured at the D100 Exhibit in Kansas City. What a treat to have been granted access to it.

It’s been five years since Disney Legend Jim Cor

It’s been five years since Disney Legend Jim Cora passed away. His long and storied career (read all about it in his book!) was one way or another dedicated to preserving the legacy of Walt Disney. He retired as chairman, Disneyland International, in 2001. Jim was my friend and mentor. Also my intern, a term he coined when he found himself digging into his mental archives and sending email missives for Eat Like Walt. He possessed a quick wit and wicked sense of humor. When he agreed to appear with me for ELW D23 Expo, he sent this advance note: “Yours is the only panel I’m on so please know I don’t plan on hanging around signing autographs and being fawned over for long.”
Later, when we finally went to Disneyland (I’ve found it’s not uncommon for those who worked with Walt preferring memories over seeing the park of today), he wasted no time pointing out what he would fix - or even allow. Eager to show me the remnants of Walt’s Disney Room and Hideout in the Plaza Inn, he walked me backstage with no clearance and challenged someone to stop him. Nobody did. Just like in real life.
Jim provided instrumental counsel for Walt’s Disneyland, dying months before it was published. It was a no brainer to dedicate the book to him. In my mind he was admonishing me: “What took you so long?”
